President Donald Trump said Monday, Nov. 2, that Republicans have a “very good chance” of winning the midterm elections, scheduled for Tuesday. In a final appeal to voters, he urged his supporters to cast ballots and help secure a victory for the party.

Trump said Republicans could win by a large margin if all of his voters turned out. He acknowledged that the president’s party typically loses seats in midterm elections, whether the president is a Republican or a Democrat, but said he believed Republicans were well positioned this time.

He also renewed his attacks on Democrats, calling the election one of the most important in U.S. history. Trump described Democratic candidates as the most dangerous ever put forward and criticized positions he attributed to the party, including its approach to immigration, taxes, gun control and energy policy. He made the remarks at the reflecting pool near the Lincoln Memorial in Washington.

The midterms will determine all 435 seats in the House of Representatives and 35 of the Senate’s 100 seats. Republicans currently hold narrow majorities in both chambers. A party needs at least 218 seats to control the House. In the Senate, a majority requires 51 votes, with the vice president able to break a tie.

Trump is not running for office in this election, but its outcome could shape the remainder of his term, which ends in January 2029. If control of either chamber changes, the administration could face greater difficulty passing legislation. A shift could also lead to more congressional scrutiny of executive decisions and limit Trump’s ability to build political support for his agenda.

The president’s appeal comes as his approval ratings have weakened. An NBC News poll released Sunday found that 40% of voters approved of his performance, while 60% disapproved. The disapproval figure was the highest the network had recorded during either of Trump’s two terms.

Economic dissatisfaction is another challenge for the White House. About three-quarters of those surveyed said they were unhappy with the country’s economic conditions. The cost of living, trade tariffs and the effects of the war with Iran were among the factors weighing on views of the administration.
