Global markets fell sharply on Friday, Nov. 6, as investors reacted to concerns that Democratic gains in the U.S. midterm elections could bring tighter regulation and slow the worldwide investment boom in artificial intelligence. Technology shares dropped after steep losses on Wall Street the previous evening, as worries about the direction of U.S. policy spread across markets.

The sell-off was broad in Asia-Pacific, where major indexes declined. More than $3.2 trillion in market value had been wiped from New York-listed stocks in the prior session, underscoring investor pessimism about the pace of future technology expansion. The Nikkei in Japan fell nearly 6%, its steepest one-day decline since the tariff shock of April 7, 2025. South Korea’s KOSPI lost 6.7%, and Taiwan’s TAIEX closed down 4.5%. Semiconductor and hardware component makers led losses in the region.

Christopher Forbes, CMC Markets’ head of Asia and the Middle East, described trading conditions as “a real disaster.” He said many clients had been heavily invested in technology stocks and indexes. As prices fell, they faced margin calls throughout the day, prompting them to sell positions amid intense stress and surprise over the election results.

Analysts said the market was beginning to account for a potential structural shift in U.S. public policy, rather than just a short-term decline in asset prices. The prospect of a Congress controlled by Democrats could mean stricter rules, with possible effects on investment in large-scale infrastructure, environmental and operational limits on new data centers, and reduced access to capital markets for companies in the sector. These are potential outcomes, not confirmed policy changes.

The election also brought renewed attention to concerns that AI companies’ valuations had become stretched, after warnings that had built up over several months. Fears that a speculative bubble could be ending accompanied steep losses in U.S. indexes: the Nasdaq fell 5.5%, the Dow Jones dropped 1,833.06 points, or 3.44%, and the S&P 500 declined 4.36%. Nvidia shares lost more than 9%, while shares of SanDisk, Micron and AMD fell between 17% and 22%.

With volatility high and expectations shifting, the report called for extreme caution in upcoming stock-market sessions. Investors were also awaiting the latest official U.S. jobs report, a key measure of the economy’s health and a factor in expectations for the next moves in interest rates. The concern about AI regulation added to uncertainty as markets assessed both the election’s possible policy implications and the economic data still to come.
